Garden Design Proposals

This garden design was created by UC Davis student Ana Guerrero after collating the ideas and suggestions of the community. While this is not a final blueprint, it is very useful in helping us to view how the garden space can be utilized to grow fresh produce and serve as a recreational space.

Our funds will first be used to modify the main water line and create the drip irrigation system in order to supply the garden with water. In the future, we also intend to use funds for fencing, cement walking paths, shade structures, gardening tools, lighting, sheds, and waste containers. Raised beds and starters will be purchased for the community to plant more crops and fruits. We also hope to construct a compost system and purchase several DIY benches for the garden that the youth can build.

Our Current Garden

We hope that the garden will also serve as a social space with outdoor sitting areas for activities like workshops and picnics. It will provide a meditative space with a walking path and peaceful sitting areas where members of the community can rest, reflect, and interact.

Our KL community partners also hope to organize recreational activities to encourage the residents of KL to exercise in this space. The KL One Health Clinic would also like to work with the community to promote healthy eating. In partnership with Empower Yolo, we would like to assign several garden responsibilities to the youth and mentor them in their educational journey. This would be a great opportunity for the youth to improve their critical thinking and leadership as they apply for higher education and jobs.
